Laptops featuring high-end 12th Gen Intel Core CPUs have started showing up in stores in India, and gamers can get the first taste of this new hardware right now. With consistent competition from AMD over the past few years, plus Apple's shift to its own in-house M1 Pro and M1 Max processors, Intel has a lot to prove in the premium laptop space. The biggest change with the 12th Gen lineup is a move to a heterogenous architecture with multiple CPU core types. We've already seen how this changes things for high-end desktops, and now it's time to talk about our first experience with a laptop powered by one of these CPUs.

We'll be testing its latest refresh from the Modern series, which the company calls its ‘business and productivity' line of laptops.

With the launches of Nvidia's GeForce GTX 16-series GPUs and Intel's 9th Gen Core CPUs for high-performance laptops earlier this year, hardware makers have refreshed their offerings and we're now seeing a flood of them in the market. Many of these models are in demand right now, and we've seen some great prices during all the recent festive sales. MSI, one of the biggest names in the PC hardware and gaming space, has been quite successful in pivoting towards pre-built gaming laptops and the company's range in India is quite vast. It's no surprise then that we have with us the new MSI GL63 9SD-1041IN for review.

MSI GT76 DT-9SG Titan Review

  • Good
  • Very good gaming performance
  • Lots of high-speed ports
  • Large non-reflective 4K screen
  • Dual NVMe SSDs in RAID plus hard drive
  • Bad
  • Can get extremely loud and hot
  • Bulky and heavy
  • Two power bricks and dongle required
  • No variable refresh rate option

There are thin-and-light “gaming lifestyle” laptops that can actually be carried around every day, and then there are “musclebook” models that are designed solely for power with no priority whatsoever given to weight or bulk. MSI's latest flagship model, the GT76 DT-9SG Titan, falls squarely and unapologetically into that latter category. It weighs over 4kg (not counting the two enormous power bricks) and uses a desktop Intel Core i9 CPU plus an Nvidia GeForce RTX series GPU with all the cooling apparatus that you'd imagine these components would require. Laptops like this are meant to be used only when plugged in, but they don't take up as much room as a full-sized gaming desktop PC, and they can be carried around when necessary.
